The Future Of Advertising

Mashable.com put out an awesome article yesterday that listed 5 ways the advertising industry is preparing for a digital future.  I shared it with all of my Twitter and Facebook friends and I had to blog about it.  Here is the direct link to the article if you'd like to read it: http://mashable.com/2011/06/28/ad-industry-digital/

There is no denying that everything has gone digital and company's have to take notice of how social networking is effecting their marketing campaigns.  We are in the future.  Everything is done in real time and people aren't afraid to tell you what they think and how they feel.  This means you really have to bring it these days when it comes to advertising.  The old methods are out the door!

I liked and learned from all of the content in the article, which also includes a video with every way the advertising industry is preparing for a digital future mentioned.  There was one video in particular that I felt I should share; where Chris Schreiber, director of marketing at social video advertising company, Sharethrough, spoke about how advertising companies are looking to bring in new talent.  And with the digital focus these days the industry is calling for "intervention" in advertising and noting that "inventors are modern storytellers".  The part I liked most was when he talked about the responsibility that advertisers have to advertise good stuff.  To be exact, he said, "We have a responsibility to not sell shit to people."

I totally agree!  As an affiliate marketer, I think it's only right that advertisers market products and companies that we they truly believe in.  We should be true to ourselves and to the people that we are advertising to.  It's more than just a paycheck.  People have to be able to trust you as an advertiser.  Especially if you're an affiliate marketer!  That is, if you want to make any real money in this industry!

I also love how Chris spoke about the advertising industry being somewhat of a dream to people who are truly generous individuals.  That's essentially what advertising is... it's sharing information with others in a clever and creative way.  Chris said that he couldn't believe that people actually get paid for this stuff!  I feel the exact same way!  And I'm sure I'm not the only one...

With all of that said... I highly recommend this article to anyone in advertising and marketing!  Below is the video of Chris speaking at the  Cannes Lions festival
